UNM students find scholarships from a variety of sources. A selection of scholarships for study abroad are linked below.


Most-Recommended Scholarships

Gilman Scholarship -- This scholarship provides awards for U.S. citizen undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding and plan to participate in a study abroad program that is at least 28 days in length. Up to $5,000.

Boren Scholarship and Fellowship -- For students studying in Latin America, Asia, Africa, the Middle East or Eastern Europe with a focus on national security or a related area, including language study. Up to $20,000 ($30,000 for graduate students). Winners must agree to work for the U.S. Government for at least one year within five years of graduation (job assistance in national security and international relations is provided).

Fulbright Program -- Prestigious grants for students to conduct research or teach English abroad.

Critical Language Scholarship -- Fully-funded immersive 8-week summer programs for a wide varity of critical languages.

Fund for Education Abroad -- Up to $10,000 for general study abroad applicants. FEA also offers dedicated scholarships to LGBTQ students and to students with an interest in Vietnam.

Ernst Mach Grant -- Stipends of €940 per month for study at FH Joanneum in Austria.

DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) -- A variety of generous scholarships to study in Germany.

Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange -- Fully-funded internships and exchange programs in Germany.

Berlin Program for Advanced German and European Studies -- Grants for research at the Freie Universität in Berlin.

American Swedish Institute (ASI) Malmberg Scholarship for Study in Sweden -- Up to $10,000 for study in Sweden. Applicants must demonstrate at least elementary proficiency in Swedish.

Sons of Norway -- A variety of scholarships for study in Norway.

American-Scandinavian Foundation Awards -- A variety of awards for graduate study in Scandinavia.

Fundacja Kosciuszkowska Polska -- Scholarships for study in Poland and for students of Polish descent.

National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) -- Awards of up to $2,500 for study in Italy or for students of Italian heritage.

Institute of Turkish Studies -- A number of scholarships are available to students wishing to travel to Turkey, especially those learning Turkish.

Danish Institute for Study Abroad -- A variety of scholarships (up to $5,000) for study in Denmark.

Chateaubriand Fellowship -- Fellowships for doctoral students to conduct research in France.

BUTEX -- Scholarships of £500 for exchange students to the UK.

US-UK Fulbright Summer Grants -- Summer stipends for undergraduate study in the UK.

Marshall Scholarship -- Prestigious grants for graduate study in the UK.

Rhodes Scholarship -- Generous grants for graduating students to study at Oxford.

North America

Killam Undergraduate Fellowship -- Grants up to $5,000 for exchange students to Canada.

Suavé Scholars -- For professionals or graduate students. Covers expenses and living arrangements at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec for nine months.


Blakemore Freeman Fellowships for Advanced Asian Language Study -- For graduate students pursuing an academic, professional, or business career that involves the regular use of a modern East or Southeast Asian language.  Minimum 3 years of language study or fluency required.  Must devote oneself to full-time intensive language study during the term of the grant.

Study in China Scholarships -- A comprehensive list of scholarships for students wishing to study in China. These scholarships are provided by the Chinese government, provincial government, and specific universities in China. Most are for a period of one academic year.

100,000 Strong Scholarship -- Scholarship for study abroad in China.

Japan Student Services Organization (Jasso) -- Scholarship for students wishing to study in Japan from three months to a year. Includes a stipend of ¥80,000 a month.

Japan Bridging Scholarship -- Scholarships of $2,500 (one semester) or $4,000 (one year) for exchange students in Japan.

Morgan Stanley Scholarship for Study in Japan -- Scholarships of $7,500 for year-long exchange students in Japan with an interest in policy, economics or finance.

Ritsumeikan University Non-Degree Inbound Exchange Scholarship (RUSSES) (PDF document) -- Scholarships for students studying at Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto, Japan for one semester or year. Will include a stipend of ¥40,000 a month.

Ministry of Education Huayu Enrichment Scholarship (HES) -- Scholarships for study in Taiwan. Students receive a monthly stipend of 25,000 NTD.

USINDO Travel Grant -- Grants of $2,000 for study in Indonesia.

Luce Scholarship -- For graduating students under 30 years of age who plan to study in Asia.

Latin America

LIVFund -- Grants of $500 for study or internships in Latin America.

Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship (FLAS) -- Grants for language study in Latin America.

Middle East

Institute of Turkish Studies -- A number of scholarships are available to students wishing to travel to Turkey, especially those learning Turkish.

Crane Rogers Foundation -- Generous fellowships for independent, self-directed study in the Middle East.

The William Jefferson Clinton Scholarship Program at the University of Dubai -- Scholarships for study at the Ameircan University of Dubai. Full waiver of tuition and dorm fees.

Center for International Learning Scholarships -- Funding for Arabic language study at the Center for International Learning in Muscat, Oman.

Dorot Fellowship -- Generous fellowship for Jewish students to study in Israel.

AMIDEAST Education Abroad Scholarship -- Up to $5,000 to participate in any of AMIDEAST's programs in the Middle East.


Diversity Abroad -- Comprehensive search engine for international scholarships.

Mobility International USA (MIUSA) -- Scholarships for students with disabilities.

Zonta International -- $1,000 scholarhship for women studying business.

Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) Scholarship -- Awards of $1,000 to $1,500 for Hispanic/Latino students.

Hispanic Scholarship Fund -- A search engine for Hispanic undergraduate and graduate students seeking scholarships to study abroad.

Black Excel Scholarships -- A database of scholarships for Black students.

Marion Wright Edelman Scholarship -- Awards $1,000 for minority students commited to global justice.

Friends of Hubbell Scholarship -- Scholarship for Native American students.

Woodrow Wilson Fellowships -- A variety of generous fellowships for students in public affairs, political science, economics and STEM fields.

Golden Key Study Abroad Scholarships -- A variety of awards for study abroad.

Glimpse Scholarship -- Awards for writing while studying abroad.

Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grants -- $1,000 awards for summer study abroad.

National Grid Public Service Award -- Grants of $15,000 for graduating students to pursue a year of public service anywhere in the world.

The Explorer’s Club -- Grants of up to $5,000 for research abroad.

Ford Foundation Grants -- A wide variety of grants for students and professionals.

Laura Bush Traveling Fellowship -- Up to $2,500 to carry out work abroad related to the mission of UNESCO.

Cultural Vistas Fellowship -- A variety of fellowships for cultural exchange around the world.

Go Overseas Scholarship -- Awards $500 for study abroad.

Global Studies Foundation Grant -- Grants for study abroad.

GoAbroad Travel Writers Contest -- Scholarships of $1,000 for study abroad travel writing.

Pimsleur Approach Study Abroad Scholarship -- Scholarships for students going abroad to learn a language.
